I was born to loving parents. My dad is an explosive scientist, so that made life very exciting. He was born on the 4th of July so of course, that’s what he chose for his profession. I didn’t realize at the time how lucky I was- I thought every kid growing up gotto experiment with things likeliquid nitrogen, mercury, making our own slime (comes back later), learning to walk and roll on the 55 gallon drums in our yard, blowing up a section of the garden so we didn’t have to till it, and so much more.
As I got older and was learning about chemicals, I would ask my dad if certain things would work mixing together and he said, “Try it.” Life was one fun, big experiment and I felt there was no judgment from him, just learning. I’m sure he knew the answer, but he let me figure it out. I have only found one thing in 50 years that he thought wouldn’t work, but it did. I had help from a dream on that one. As I look back my dad taught me that there isn’t really “failure” its just learning and finding 1000 ways that don’t work. My dad also taught me that “life isn’t fair.” Oh, that will help me later…
My mom is incredibly positive and would ALWAYS say, “Look for the good.” I had 5 siblings that treated me like a princess and we were not allowed to fight. Probably good in most ways except I didn’t learn to communicate my feelings very well, I was sent to my room to think about it. That leads me to write, so journaling has always been a big part of my life. My mom taught me to have goals, work hard, and save my money. A couple of things she paid half- that way she knew I really wanted it. My brother and I saved for part of our trampoline- a great upgrade from the inner tubes we set out like an obstacle course in the yard. It looks like we were pretending to have a band on this day… (My mom took a ton of pictures growing up. I’m thankful now! Then–not so much.)
I remember going to California and Disneyland each summer when I was young. My parents had raised the four children before me there, so that’s where many of their friends lived. We drove the station wagon with sleeping bags in the back so we could all lay down. No seat belts required! We would stop every few hours to add water to the car water pump so we didn’t overheat. The car that is- we had all overheated- being in the car with a ton of kids and no air conditioning. What a blast!
In 1978 I was 10 years old and my dad created a product that was like slime. I have in my journal that I sold my first one at school that year. Our family and friends had so much fun with it. Later, when I was 22, my brother, sister and I turned it into a business with the product we named Glow Dough.
Life seemed so easy and sweet in the ’70s and ’80s. I remember roller skating all over the neighborhood, walking up the street with my sister to sit under our neighbor’s apple tree and create images out of the clouds, and sleeping out on the tramp under the stars with my best friend.
My parents did so much for me and gave me a life full of happiness and peace. These really were WONDER years- I could sit and wonder, learn and grow. Yes, wonderful.
