When I went through the loss of my husband and the healing that goes along with suicide I found a few music artists that I connected strongly with. Kelly Clarkson is one of those. I love her song Piece by Piece. It’s a song that hits close to home. At the beginning of my healing process, I would get angry and feel like my husband left me with so much on my plate, like he didn’t even care. Now I know since I have studied depression and suicide it wasn’t that. He didn’t do it to hurt us, he just didn’t have inner peace and this was his best answer on how to get out of his pain. But I still had to figure out how to put my life and my children’s life back together. It was piece by piece. When I hear the words to this song it hurts my heart but helps me in a way. I found a man that I can’t thank enough who lifted me and restored my faith that a man can be kind and a father could stay.
Walking towards the airport, leaving us all in your past
I traveled fifteen hundred miles to see you
I begged you to want me, but you didn’t want to
Off the ground, where you abandoned things
Piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me
Six years old and you know
He never walks away
He never asks for money
He takes care of me
He loves me
Piece by piece, he restores my faith
That a man can be kind and the father could, stay
I made something of myself and now you wanna come back
But your love, it isn’t free, it has to be earned
Back then I didn’t have anything you needed so I was worthless
Off the ground, where you abandoned things
Piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me
Six years old and you know
He never walks away
He never asks for money
He takes care of me
‘Cause he loves me
Piece by piece, he restored my faith
That a man can be kind and a father could, stay
I would never leave her like you left me
She will never have to wonder her worth
Because unlike you I’m gonna put her first
He’ll never walk away
He’ll never break her heart
He’ll take care of things
He’ll love her
Piece by piece
He restored my faith
That a man can be kind
And a father should be great
